Winter Pond Care

As we head further into autumn, now is the time to start thinking about your winter pond care. Before the frost steps in now is the time to tidy up your ponds, if you didn’t have time to do so last month. Here are a few tips to consider if you haven’t already so that your pond is looking great and any wildlife are safe over the colder months:

Pond Care Tips

  • Clear the pond of any remaining debris, weeds, and excess planting. This can all be recycled by composting it. However, it is best to wait a couple of days. This will allow any wildlife removed when clearing the pong to re-enter their natural habitat.
  • Feed your fish less as it gets colder – their metabolism will slow down so they will not need as much to eat.
  • Organics in your pond will decompose and release harmful gasses. If your pond is iced over, you must leave a little area free from ice so that these gasses can escape the pond.
  • Cover your pond with netting this season to prevent falling leaves from entering the water.
