French beans are easier to grow compared to native beans and are one of the freshest tastes of summer. They are also pest and disease free so are able to bumper yields in limited spaces.
Make good use of vertical space by choosing climbing selections or if space is limited, pick compact but heavy-cropping dwarf bush types. To make borders productive and attractive chose a cultivar that produces purple, red, speckled or yellow pods.
Growing French beans
Sow French beans in late April, under cover in temperatures of above 12 degrees (55F). Plant one seed in each 8cm pot, 5cm deep. When seedlings are 8cm tall and the frost has past, plant outdoors, 10cm apart in rows any well drained soil that has been enriched with well-rotted manure or garden compost is appropriate.
For a continuous amount, sow seeds every three weeks until the start of July, and you can be picking beans until October. By mid-May in most areas, seeds can be sown directly into the soil. Use horticultural fleece for early protection.
