Your garden may be green in colour, but how environmentally friendly are your gardening habits? We can all take inexpensive steps towards making our gardens more eco-friendly. Not only will this reduce your carbon footprint, but it will improve your garden and the surrounding area as well as potentially save you some money! Environmentally friendly gardening will ensure that your garden is full of life all year round, here are just some ways you can improve your garden’s green status:

  • Environmentally Friendly GardeningForget chemical-filled pesticides, instead, plant ladybird friendly flowers such as marigolds. Ladybirds are natural predators of aphids, so will quickly munch their way through any pests you may have!
  • Everyone enjoys having birds in their garden and they too are great at getting rid of those pesky slugs, so hang up your bug spray and hang out a bird feeder instead.
  • Rather than buying pots for your seeds, recycle old yoghurt pots to reduce any extra waste.
  • If you don’t already have a compost heap, it’s definitely time to start one! Green waste, vegetable peelings, paper and cardboard all make great additions to any thriving compost heap.
  • Did you know you can add coffee grounds to your compost heap to add nitrogen and to your soil as a fertiliser? Coffee grounds add minerals to the soil and help with aeration and water retention. As the coffee grounds are a by-product of our morning pick me up, cafés often will give you some for free, as it means less waste for themselves.

So let’s try and change our gardening habits this summer and make our gardening a little more green! Get in touch and let us know how you go on with these changes. We look forward to hearing what changes you make and possibly hearing your eco-friendly garden tips!
