With the beautiful weather we have seen over the past couple of days, you’re bound to have seen a bee on your travels. Bees have a very important job in your garden, they visit the different flowers to collect nectar and pollen, which they use as food.
The best way to encourage bees into your garden is by providing nectar and pollen rich flowers throughout the whole year and encouraging them to nest in your garden. Here are a few tips on how to encourage bees into your garden:
- Plant clumps of bee-friendly plants in the sunny areas of you garden. This will attract the bees to certain areas of your garden and will be much more effective than scattering different plants around your garden.
- Provide sites for bees to nest. Bees like to nest in hollow stems, such as herbaceous plant stems. You can buy cardboard nesting tubs from your local garden centres and you should place these in the sunny areas of your garden.
- Planting flowers with singular petals also attract bees. Bees particularly love roses, poppies and sunflowers.
- If you have an area in your garden that you can let grow wild, this would really encourage bees into your garden.
It is very important to encourage bees into your garden as they are one of the main pollinators of food crops. Although this is a bees main job, they also produce honey and wax which are two more important products! So next time you spread that honey on your toast remember that it came from a hard working bee!
