Protecting your Garden in Winter

We’ve had a lot of clients contacting us over the last few weeks who have been inquiring about how to protect their garden from the elements. Since so many are eager to find out how to do this, we would like to offer you a little more advice on protecting your garden in winter.

JHPS Gardens - Maintenance

Cold weather will freeze the water in your plants and can cause damage to their cell walls. Your plants will become limp and blackened whilst evergreens may turn brown from a lack of water. Long spells of severe cold and frozen soil can damage evergreens when they are unable to take up water then this causes the plants to die back from a lack of nutrients and moisture.

It’s found regularly that any plants which catch the morning sun that if they have been frozen overnight then the sudden heat will cause the plants to defrost quickly. This will cause damage to the plants’ cell walls. Furthermore, the lowest points of your garden are also the frostiest parts of the garden, therefore, you should avoid planting tender plants in these areas of your garden.

In preparation for the spring, it may be a good idea to check your lawn to see if there are any puddles gathering in your garden. If there are then this could indicate that the soil is very compacted and should be aerated as soon as possible.
