Looking after Astrantias in your Garden

Astrantias has been cultivated in Britain for more than five centuries. There are quite a few different names for this – some of the more common names which it is recognised by are:

  • Melancholy gentlemen
  • Hattie’s Pincushion
  • Masterwort

They look fantastic in modern style plantings as well as quaint cottage gardens. These Chelsea gardens gold medallists, flower from late May to August for most varieties.

How to Plant Astrantias

Plant in the front of a sunny yet moist border, where the flowers will get appreciated attention. Include a fair amount of organic matter when planting; it’s also a good idea to water well when the weather is dry. This is especially important for newly recognised plants.

In early spring, lift and divide large clumps and apply a generous amount of well rotted manure or garden compost around the plant.

Astrantias are a lovely addition to any garden so Blue Iris Landscapes hope that this article gives you some helpful tips on how to plant them.
